Green Porno

Green Porno is not exactly what anyone would think when they here the words “green” or “porno”. Green Porn is a series of short films created by writer, director and actor Isabella Rossellini that explain the explicit sexual acts of several insects. Green Porn is amazingly funny yet some how very educational. Like a PBS children’s documentary these short films took me back to my childhood with colorful imagery and playful comic like stories that help illustrate a difficult subject to explain.

These low budget films were designed for the “3rd Screen” an independent film term for internet and mobile computing devices like i-pods and cell phones. Isabella uses common materials like paper and fabric to model her costumes & scenery in a artistically creative way that is visually captivating and I hope you find them as delightful as I did.

You can view Green Porn at this URL:
http://www.sundancechannel.com/greenporno

Recycling The Looking Glass: When Garbage and Art Collide

“Recycling the Looking Glass” is a traveling art exhibition that opened last month in Norway, and will be showing at various locations throughout the country through December of 2009.

The show’s concept uses trash art and found objects as its starting points, two practices in which waste and discarded objects are reused artistically as metaphor to illustrate cultural significance. “Looking Glass” takes this approach to the next level, highlighting the global issues of conservation and the importance of recycling as its primary focal points. The exhibition aims to address the social, cultural, political, environmental and economic dimensions of recycling as a worldwide dilemma, and uses its pieces to provoke thought on these critical issues.

The show opened on April 5th in Oslo to critical acclaim, much to the delight of curator Samir M’Kadmi (read his full-length Everyday Trash interview). M’Kadmi hopes the exhibition will continue to be well-received as it travels throughout Norway over the next year and a half.

“Recycling the Looking Glass” aims to be the most successful artistic exhibition to intersect the worlds of contemporary art, the environment, and global society.
Garbage Art -- Or The Art of Garbage?

Garbage Art, or, the technique that incorporates trash, waste, or any type of discarded refuse into artistic compositions, is rapidly growing in popularity. This trend is a prime example of art imitating life—as the call to recycle, conserve resources, and live responsibly becomes a more and more important and prominent concept in our society, the artistic world has aptly followed suit. Utilizing garbage is not only a sustainable means of constructing works of art, it’s also often a way to say something larger about society as a whole, and the way we interact with our material goods.

The following is a small compilation of some of the most intriguing and innovative pieces to incorporate trash. Check it out:

NYC Garbage

Sculpture artist Justin Gignac collects garbage from New York City streets and builds unique, one-of-a-kind air tight cubes that he fills with a random assortment of trash. Each cube has the date and location where the trash was collected.

Pantherhouse.com

This site has some incredible trash sculpture work, including this incredible piece by Tim Noble and Sue Webster, comprised of a full six months of their garbage!

Pink Tentacle

These garbage bags have been decorated in an effort to transform the unsightly problem of Japanese neighborhood trash into an aesthetically pleasing, colorful composition. The colors on the bags even correspond to Japan’s color codes for sorting different types of trash.

Artist HA Schult began building life-sized “trash people” in 1996 from garbage he collected in his hometown of Cologne, Germany.
