Bidet vs. Hand Bidet Sprayer

There are many advantages of getting a hand bidet sprayer over the traditional bidet not the least of which is cost. Not only the cost of buying it which is substantial (for the full size bidet) but for the cost of installation also. With the hand bidet sprayer you don’t need a plumber to install it. Assuming you even have the space to fit one there are more additional compelling reasons not to.

For example stand alone bidets are simply not as effective at what they are supposed to achieve and that is cleaning your nether regions. The problem is two fold. One, they lack control as they are in a set position and mechanically controlled so you have less chance of getting to certain spots. Second the water pressure is considerably less so when cleaning your butt you may find that it has not really done the job. With the hand held sprayer you get complete control and better water flow which provides much better results.

Another often unthought-of aspect of the conventional bidet’s sprayer is that since the spray mechanism is mechanical and comes out underneath you there is the distinct possibility of residue falling on and staying on the sprayer from one use to the other, a most unpleasant thought. With the handheld sprayer not only does it NOT have to be directly beneath you (it more than likely will be held at a side angle since it’s in your hand) it is also extremely accessible for cleaning (it) and because of the greater water pressure and flow it tends to be more self-cleaning.

Then there is the maintenance aspect which I doubt many people want to try and figure out why the automated spray wand has stopped coming out on their conventional bidet whereas the potential problems with the hand sprayer are minimal and very easy to correct.

Finally there is the logistics in that most people only put a conventional bidet in their master bath whereas with the hand held bidet sprayer you can put them in all of the bathrooms so that everyone benefits. One reason for that is space, which usually only the master bath has enough room for the stand alone bidet. As you can see the hand held bathroom bidet sprayer is superior in every way to the conventional stand alone bidet, oh and I almost forgot…..who wants to get up and move from the toilet to another place to get clean anyways? Americans are a very proud people, and rightly so. At times there are people who get indignant at the idea that their toilet paper is not adequate for cleaning up with because how can anyone suggest that our technology is inferior to another countries, especially some third world country?! The idea of using a Bathroom Bidet Sprayer incites furious outcries! But hear me out; nothing could be farther from the truth. Actually it is because our technology is so good, the best, that we find ourselves stuck with a method that is now antiquated and even potentially harmful. You see we have the best plumbing in the world and because of that we can flush massive amounts of toilet paper down the pipes with no problem (usually). Have you ever seen on of those vortex toilets? I swear I believe that if it got ahold of my leg it would take all of me down! Now take a look at the so-called third world toilets. The horror: a hole in the ground and no seat = the infamous “squat toilet”. Now these toilets cannot take massive amounts of toilet paper because they have no flusher, you have to poor water in them to make them work and even if there is any toilet paper (not usually) you are supposed to put it in a bin nearby, shudder. So they came up with the hand sprayer to get clean with. That way you need minimal toilet paper, or a towel since all you have to do is dry off. Now I’ve heard all the snickers and comments about walking around with a wet spot on your pants and although humorous I’m afraid that’s all they are because it’s just not the case. If the French hadn’t been the one to invent the bidet and thereby tainted its image forever I believe these would be commonplace it the US and other western countries. If you've ever built a rain barrel, or harvested your own rain water in some way, then you know how easy it is. You can use rain water to water your yard, wash your car, and any number of other uses. What if you could fairly easily use rain water to flush your toilet? Think of all the water you'd save.

Some house do utilize rain water for flushing, as do public buildings, so the possibility is reasonable for you if you own a home. Recently I saw a cool post at Seattlepi.com - at their reader blog section. The post, Flushing Your Toilet with Rainwater, covers a neat resource,a Rain Barrel to Toilet Installation Guide.

The individual who wrote this guide did a good job. It's not hard to follow and there are some great illustrations - both photos and diagrams. It's also a easy project to find parts for; this person snagged everything from the local Home Depot. The guide even discusses extras like backflow protection; a step not required in all states, but it's there, and is simple. Also extra a nice bit about attaching a water meter inside, so you can see just how much you're using. Best of all the entire installation cost around $100. A steal!

Best of all, of course are the environmental impacts. Curiously, the guy who did this is living in Seattle. Being in Oregon and the Washington myself, people often act like water conservation is a joke; I mean, we have so much rain. But rain coming down, does not equal plenty to go around. We still need to conserve when possible.
