A Bicycle Powered Heavy Metal Concert and Other Green Entertainment News

I'm thinking about this post at Tree Hugger today. Even though tomorrow will feature Earth Hour, when millions of people will turn their lights off for an hour to raise global warming awareness, a Tel Aviv heavy metal concert will go on. Instead of electric power the concert will be fueled by 42 pedaling volunteers.

Hey...wait....does this count? I mean, the lights will still be on, right?

"Keep your eyes open and your flashlights near tomorrow night between 8 and 9pm," writes Karen from Green Prophet, "because Tel Aviv will be taking part in Earth Hour."

So here's my question, and feel free to answer it if you like. Is the purpose of Earth Hour to not use electricity or to turn off the lights, because there's a difference. I appreciate the group Knesiat Hasechel wanting to raise awareness and all, but if the point is to plunge the world into darkness, aren't they defeating the purpose?

In other entertainment news, Julia Louis Dreyfuss is voting for the earth...

...and Gwyneth Paltrow and Cameron Diaz want you to Act Green by signing their petition to increase fuel economy and unite to conserve energy and reduce our reliance on oil.

Rock on!

Celebrities Turn Off Their Lights for Earth Hour

On March 29th at 8:00 PM, people all around the world will turn their lights off for an hour, Earth Hour. Last year this experiment took place in Sydney, this year it’s a global experience designed to raise awareness of global warming.

Unfortunately, if it were just me and the other little people turning off the lights, not too many people would take notice. Fortunately, some big names are taking part, and nothing sells an idea like celebrity. Cate Blanchett, Pete Wentz, Dolly Parton, and many others will be shutting down and doing their part. In fact, Nelly Furtardo is even going to be performing in Canada in honor of Earth Hour.

Many national and international landmarks will be taking part as well. Expect to see lights dimmed on the Golden Gate Bridge, the Sydney Opera House and even The Weather Channel home office in Atlanta.

You might be asking yourself…so? I turn off the lights for an hour. What good will it do? Well, by turning off your lights your joining others to protest global warming and raise awareness regarding climate change issues. By turning off your lights you know your involved in a good cause. You’re saving money. You’re saving energy. And you’re giving a damn. Really giving a damn is what we all need to do to save the earth, isn’t it. Isn’t that worth an hour in the dark?

To learn more details, visit the Earth Hour website. Register. Get involved. Learn how to plan an Earth Hour event or calculate your carbon footprint. One person like me may not be able to make a difference, but millions of us can. We just have to give a damn.
