Sex and the City Lingerie Line Uses Bamboo

The media blitz surrounding the "Sex and the City" movie has been relentless, and until now RiverWired was one of the only sites on the Internet that hadn't mentioned it. Until now! But there is a green angle.

Cosabella is a lingerie line featured regularly throughout the HBO series, like in bedroom scenes when Carrie wore bras to honor her no-nudity clause. Just in time for the movie, Cosabella has released a "Sex & the City"-inspired line (with no overt references to the show, just the personalities of the characters, and the tags inside the undies). The line has looks named for each of the four main characters, and the comparatively modest Charlotte line uses bamboo fabric. The press release describes Charlotte's line as "more like typical sleepwear - since she seems like the most likely candidate to actually lounge at home in her pajamas."

Figures they'd give the eco line to the lamest character. But it's cool that they did include the bamboo fabric.

Also in the same press release--HBO's VP of licensing and retail mentions efforts to be eco-friendly with their other S&TC merch.

Biking Made Just a Bit More Comfy

Biking for miles on end can be a real pain in the butt, literally. But Greenknickers has arrived to solve all of your sore bum woes.

The eco-friendly company makes all types of funky undies, which can be purchased online at their website, www.greenknickers.org. Say founders Sarah and Rose, “We started Greenknickers to prove that ethical choices can be funny, beautiful and sexy. The logical place to start was obviously knickers!”

The cycling knickers have a removable padding inside that cushions you for support on the bicycle. They are made from 70 percent bamboo, which is particularly soft and good if participating in sports, and 30 percent organic cotton.

That’s not even the coolest thing on the site though. Other unique designs include Global Warming Knickers, which has a picture of a globe in the front. The catch is that once warmed up, the sea begins to take over the land on the globe, showing the effects of global warming.
There are also Seasonal Knickers with autumn-like trees, but again, once warmed up the leaves fall off, creating more of a winter feel.

Bamboo Bike is a Cut Above the Rest

In 1987, directly after enduring a “spectacular” head-on collision in Boston, handyman and soon-to-be designer Craig Calfee was in dire need of a bicycle. Strapped for cash, and determined to find a bicycle that was as tough as possible, Calfee decided to build his own, by hand, out of materials he had gathered at a job making composite rowing shells. The rest, as they say, is history.

In 2005, eighteen years and several award-winning bicycle models later, Calfee’s company, now called Calfee Designs, released a bike that started to garner a lot of attention based on its unorthodox design concept: it was made entirely out of bamboo. Calfee had been toying with the idea of a bamboo bicycle for several years, but now, after making a short run of 12 bikes for employees, relatives and friends, the positive feedback was too good to ignore, and the bamboo bike was slated for production.

The bamboo bike, now available for purchase on the Calfee Design website, has rapidly become a staple of Calfee’s line. Weighing in at just four pounds, the bicycle is tough, durable, and crash tolerant. Bamboo, though very light, is a surprisingly strong and resilient wood. The bamboo is smoked and heat treated to prevent splitting, and coated with Tung oil for a sleek, protective seal. Further, because of the nature of the materials used, and the hand construction of the bike, the carbon footprint of the bamboo bicycle is remarkably low.

Appropriate for everyday riding, commuting and/or racing, the bamboo bike has received accolades at the North American Handmade Bicycle Show, winning the awards for Best Road Bike, Best Off-Road Bike and People’s Choice Award. Additionally, a Calfee Bamboo bike won 1st place in the open class at the Great Western Bicycle Rally’s Concourse d’Elegance show. Clearly, there is much more to this bicycle than an unusual design and stylish good looks.

The Calfee Bamboo Bike comes in road and mountain varieties. Frames start at $2,695.
