The Tesla Roadster Cometh

Production of the electric supercar began March 17

Lo, it hath happened, that unto us an EV supercar is born. After rumors of much corporate bickering and infighting and a couple of high-level departures, the long-awaited Tesla Roadster is finally in production -- meaning these cars may soon driveth down a street near you.

Yea, there are other electric-powered supercars in the pipeline, such as the Fisker Karma, but Tesla hath beaten Fisker to the punch. And verily, there are other EVs on the way that promise to be more affordable than the $100,000+ Tesla, like the Chevy Volt, but that car will not reacheth dealerships until 2009 at the earliest. Miles Electric Vehicles also buildeth the XS500 for 2009, which promiseth speeds of 80 mph and more, along with a 120-mile range per charge.

But the first of these, in Spring 2008, is the sold out Tesla Roadster, of the 125-mph top speed, 4-second 0-60 time, and 220-mile range. The company's press release regarding the start of production sayeth not much, and the PR guy hast not returned my phone call, but new president and CEO Ze'ev Driori hast blogged about the first day of manufacturing, though not in any detail. Tesla plans to delivereth all 600 pre-ordered 2008 models this year.

Being a brainchild of the Silicon Valley, Tesla hath tendrils throughout the blogosphere. Read about it here, and here, and here. And, of course, here, at RiverWired.com.
