A Speedy, Compact, Fuel Efficient Car? Sounds Smart To Us
The Smart Car makes its US debut
It's Good: Starting in 2008, The Smart Car (which has been around in Europe for donkeys years, and don't ask us how long that is) will finally be available in the US. This tiny automotive genius is only nine feet long and five feet wide -- but it still received a 4-star crash rating. It also goes up to 90 mph -- but that wouldn't be a fuel-smart way to drive, now would it?
It's Green: The Smart Car gets 42 miles per gallon, which is not only more efficient than the 2020 standards recently passed in the US Energy Bill, it'll also save you some significant green at the gas station. So the car makes you feel smarter, too.
It's Here: www.SmartUSA.com - reserve yours now for only $99.
It's: $11,000- $17,000, depending on model and package options.

I love the Smart Car, and as
| Amanda Johanssen | Oct 27th, 2009I love the Smart Car, and as soon as the kids are big enough to ride their bikes to school, there will be one parked in the driveway. I was just looking at it thinking that with all the hydrogen-powered Hummers and SUV guzzlers that are still on the roads, that you would sort of feel like an ant that could be stepped on at any minute! It may have received a 4-star crash rating ... but I'd really like to know how that was measured before I put my kids in the front seat. I was also a bit disappointed to see that this article says only 42 mpg, where another here (http://www.lime.com/forum/planet/14218/the_smart_car_is_coming) said up to 80mpg! I wonder if the way the car's serviced and the optional extras would make a difference.

The new money, which raises
| hanahbr | Sep 23rd, 2009The new money, which raises the total appropriated for the program to $3 billion, should fund the program at least through September, the program's administrators say. The money should be enough for about 750,000 total clunker trades.
