A new plug-and-play device from Canada's Nevvus Group promises to very simply cut home energy use by 10% or more -- just by plugging it into a wall outlet.

According to Nevvus, their POWERGARD "works to reduce power spikes and energy surges and regulates the electrical system of any home or office, making it more efficient. The unit stores energy otherwise lost in the operation of inductive motors -- found in many household appliances such as refrigerators, air conditioners and vacuum cleaners -- in its capacitors and recycles it for maximum energy efficiency."

So not only does the POWERGUARD even out your power use, it tries to grab excess power, store it, then feed it back into your own electrical system.

The POWERGUARD costs $199.99 plus shipping, and Novvus says users can save enough to make the device pay for itself in a year or less.

Nevvus claims that 300,000 people around the world are already using their device. It it works, I could see that number climbing in the coming months as electricity prices continue to climb.
