Green Celebrity Round Up

A Weekly Look at What Celebrities are Doing for the Environment

Dave Matthews

We're hearing a lot about "green" celebrities now. Part of me is thrilled people are finally taking environmental issues seriously while the other part is disappointed because I know for many this only the latest trend. Still, I'm not complaining. Even if it's only a passing fad (and let's hope it's not) I'll happily accept any positive changes.

Here's what I'm hoping will be a regular feature. A round up featuring details on what the different celebrities are doing for the environment. Today we're going to look at some rockers.

Dave Matthews: Dave Matthews realizes that 15 years of touring can take it's toll on the environment. Tour busses, planes and trucks hauling equipment put out some powerful emissions. To offset those emissions, Dave is helping to fun programs geared towards offsetting the damage caused by those CO2 emissions including building turbines and planting trees. And Davis isn't only planting a couple of trees here and there. He's offsetting 100% of emissions put out while his band tours. Rock on, Dave.

Bare Naked Ladies: Not wanting to pollute the environment, these Canadian rocker run all their tour buses on alternative biodiesel fuel.

Midnight Oil's Peter Garrett - Peter Garrett, the former frontman for the Australian band Midnight Oil is now that country's Environmental Minister.

Alainis Morrissette - In addition to using recycled materials to package her CDs, Alainis formed "Reverb" a non-profit organization geared towards helping music lovers to achieve environmental sustainability through carbon-neutral initiatives.

Sting - Is a well known supporter and protector of the rainforest.

Cold Play - Offsetting carbon emissions caused by touring by planting 10,000 mango trees in India.

Sheryl Crow - Uses Bio Diesel when touring, restricts her (and her crew's) toilet paper use, and gives concerts benefiting environmental causes.

I always say that people who are famous or in the public eye don't have to be role models. They should keep in mind however, that people are watching and acting like them. Being in the limelight is a responsibility. If anyone can raise awareness on environmental causes, it's celebrities.
